Trigger Point Therapy for Temporomandibular Joint Disorders
Many factors contribute to disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that can cause:
There are different causes of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) including arthritis or a jaw injury. But if TMD is related to tightness and imbalance in the TMJ muscles, often along with clenching or grinding (bruxism), manual trigger point therapy for these muscles can be an effective part of treatment.
TMD Treatment
Trigger points are hyper-tensed nodules within muscles (muscle knots) that create tension, and result in local and/or referred pain and other issues. Trigger point massage and manual therapy may help.
When the jaw muscles are overly tight or imbalanced, manual therapy works well to help restore normal muscle tone and balance between the TMJ muscles.
Nicole Urell is certified through Myopain Seminars in the assessment and treatment of myofascial pain of the head, face and jaw. This includes intra-oral techniques which treat the jaw muscles inside the mouth.
Treatment typically starts by gently addressing the neck musculature for tension and balance. Muscles of the outer jaw are treated with finger pressure, and we treat muscles of the jaw that are within the mouth with gentle trigger point therapy and neuromuscular techniques.
